Because of uncertainties in prediction of noise levels for propellers at low tip speeds, tests were made on rear propeller of Hovercraft Development Ltd HD 1 hovercraft; tests brought out sources of discrepancies existing between theory and experiment and were also useful in providing general background to subject; as agreement with theory does not seem particularly good, simple empirical method was devised for predicting overall noise levels at 105° to thrust axis, representing direction of maximum or near maximum noise.
