Present economic background of ship operation is reviewed and problem of costs and time factor discussed; risks of insufficient manning are noted; savings in maintenance time are considered and need for efficient feedback of technical information is stressed; proper training is essential in operation and maintenance and greater use of mobile maintenance squads is advocated.
