Theory is developed to account for flight of birds which without batting wings advance against the wind and rise in atmosphere. Bird soaring flight is considered as forming "supporting propulsive" system constituted by mass displaced from position of stable equilibrium. Mechanical applications of soaring flight are visualized. (See also Nature (Paris), no. 2419, Aug. 14, 1920, pp. 109-112, 6 figs)
