Requirements, from viewpoint of material division of U.S. Army Air Corps, are considered; anti-knock value; volatility; vapor locking and starting properties; gum; available fuels and antiknocks; features of Air Corps tentative Specification Y-3557. Fuels for use in aircraft engines are discussed with reference to their anti-knock value, volatility, vapor-locking and engine-starting properties, gum content and availability, and to anti-knock agents; fuel systems should embody pressure feed of fuel by pump suction of which is below lowest point of fuel tanks.
