Pilot injection defined as introduction of small quality of fuel into Diesel engine at some period before dead center, in order to start combustion, and subsequently of main charge after flame has established itself; tests described offer proof for contention that pilot injection may reduce combustion knock considerably, and increase power output appreciably. From Automotive Industries June 25 and Oct 29 1938. (See also Mech Eng v 61 n 3 Mar 1939 p 230-1)
