Diesel engines fitted in smaller cars of South Australian Railways comprise either Gardner 5LW engine developing 86 bhp at 1700 rpm, or Gardner 6LW engine giving 102 bhp at 1700 rpm; four big rebuilt cars have Gardner 8L3 engines giving 204 bhp at slower rotational speed of 1200 rpm.
