C-2 type cargo vessels for U S Maritime Commission built by Federal Shipbuilding Co; on trials, both vessels attained what is believed to be world's record in fuel economy; length oa 459 ft 2 1/2 in.; beam extreme 63 ft 2 in.; depth molded to shelter deck 40 ft 6 in.; fitted with General Electric cross compound impulse turbine, developing 6000 hp at 92 rpm.
