Naval Ship Systems Command has authorized submarine shipyards to use locking resin with 3A/3B fit studs as equal substitute for establishing stud backout resistance equivalent to 5A/5B fit; advantages include elimination of stud driver torque, ability of sealant to both seal and lock stud threads, and assurance that studs can be assembled in any area; disadvantages are cleaning, degreasing, and cure time.
