Basic equations governing equilibrium and tension of flexible cable are derived and presented in simple form; aircraft and towed vehicle were assumed to be rigid bodies; equations are then used to demonstrate that widely accepted assumption that cable's tangential drag force is negligible is incorrect; effect of cable's weight is also demonstrated; results, using measured quantities for lift and drag forces, for towed vehicle system (in air) considering both nylon and steel cables are illustrated; pertinence to determination of stability criteria.
