Review of major design problems common to all hypersonic air vehicles are discussed in relation to hypersonic commercial air transport for intercontinental airline service 15 to 20 yr hence; two factors responsible for structural design problems and high structural weight ratios of hypersonic airplanes are high temperatures produced by aerodynamic heating and storage and use of liquid hydrogen fuel; some concepts and approaches relating to fuselage liquid hydrogen tankage, wing structures, and propulsion system structures are considered. Condensed version of paper presented at Centenary Congress of Royal Aeronautical Society, London, Sept 1966.
