Question as to whether power for supersonic airliners should be generated at constant (400 cps) frequency; it requires constant speed drive to couple shaft takeoff from main propulsion engine to electrical generator; if these drives which require extensive maintenance, could be dispensed with, great simplification would result; how this can be done without penalty for typical supersonic airliner; it is concluded that, provided trim, jettison and flying control power pumps are not driven electrically, best electrical generating system for supersonic airliner is virtually decided by what system is best for large number of engine fuel service pumps involved.
