Large scale experiment with 148 subjects listening to sounds of aircraft flying overhead is described; validity of rating scales in this type of experiment was investigated using four groups of subjects in two different noise environments; result confirmed earlier suggestion that subjects form their judgments largely on basis of category names of rating scale rather than merely to fill range of responses provided; subjects were strongly influenced by their knowledge of source of sound, and they compensated to some extent for reductions of sound level caused by transmission into building or by great distances of propagation.
