Survey examines requirements of multimission aircraft, to be used by U S Air Force and Navy in limited wars; Air Force has FX concept, Navy VFAX concept, for multimission tactical aircraft; possible trends in developments are indicated, based on advances in high-thrust/ weight engines, multimode avionics, variable-geometry wings and standoff air-to-surface missiles; key study technique, energy maneuverability, is used by Air Force and aircraft firms to help determine design tradeoffs for high-performance aircraft; by means of technique it is possible to study design for multipurpose aircraft and determine if it excels in air-superiority role or as bomber; parameters considered include speed, range, maneuverability, propulsion, altitude, structural loading, weight, types of avionics and armament.
