Analytical method presents optimum structural material/design concept that provides best balance between weight and cost for given vehicle; criterion for selection of optimum cost-weight design is dependent upon value of weight saving applied to vehicle under study; this value is derived in sample analysis of total systems costs associated with fighter aircraft; it is shown that optimum design for structures cost effectiveness may differ from minimum-weight concept, and that merit function used may be applied to any structural design problem wherein weight and cost are prominent evaluation factors; examples of applications to other design areas.
