During 18 yr Elliott-Automation Ltd developed concept of high-reliability design in aviation control systems, which is now finding increasingly wide application; approach in design of autopilot of VC10 was to apply self-monitoring to various elements of autopilot system, thereby introducing failure detection system as part of basic autopilot; failure detection monitoring and techniques used are illustrated in diagrams and four examples show principles of sensor monitoring.
