Community planning requires knowledge of probable traffic noise levels; in this connection, experimental study was made of characteristics of rolling noise of automobiles; properties of road surface prove to be important parameters of this type of noise; mathematical model of traffic flow on road is established and compared with measured noise levels; agreement is good enough to allow prediction of noise levels as function of distance and traffic density in simple cases.
