Factors that influence amount of tightening or preloading of bolts in automobile engine; attempt is made to consider influence of constant preload stress on factor of safety as defined in C.R.Soderberg's equation; separation of constant preload stress from mean stress due to variable loading will lead to more realistic approach to definition of factor of safety against fatigue; if factor of safety against separation is taken as equal to that against fatigue, bolt dimensions can be directly found, bypassing any trial and error method.
