Report of the test at Tonawanda. By the side of the tow-path are two cables; the upper 1 1/4 in. cable is 16 ft. from the ground and supports the motor, the smaller 5/8 in. cable is wound around the hauling drum of the motor and carries the return current. Five loaded boats were towed at the rate of 4.7 miles per hour. It is estimated that this method will reduce the cost 82 per cent. over mules, and 55 per cent. over steam. The test was under official supervision. (1300 w.)
