Changes in specific output and to engine variables can be precisely assessed on test bench but road performance cannot be easily forecast from results; comparative road tests of commercial vehicles and passenger cars with turbocharged engines have been made, and results of tests with vehicles in 12-ton commercial vehicle and sedan car classes are reported; it is shown that measurements to determine technical merits of power unit of commercial vehicle are straight-forward and choice of turbocharged engine reasons can easily be made; in case of passenger car, measure of productivity is difficult to define and choice of vehicle is subject to variety of considerations.
