Features of new marine dredging ship Pen Avon which proved successful in applying new principle of 'pushing' up gravel from greater depths where conventional methods are ineffective; 1200 tons of gravel can be loaded in 2 to 3 hr; dredging head of 155-ft pipe is lowered to sea bed and positioned by remote control from bridge; hydraulic pumps powered by main engine, supply high pressure water to dredging head which returns to hold carrying gravel; surplus water goes overboard through spillways.
