Tests on Australian, Japanese, and French railways; undulatory wear; transverse-fissure formation and propagation; in France, rupture through internal fissuring, characterized by tache argentee (silvery spots) is known, but transverse superficial fissures are more numerous and have caused serious accidents; it is author's conviction that heat treatment will enforce itself more and more in rail manufacture.
