It is claimed that operating safety of engines in commercial transport planes is not yet satisfactory; by proposed method of grading performances it is possible to satisfy apparently conflicting demands of traffic and maximum-performance efforts with engines which are uniform in their main parts; recommendations are made for mean working pressure; piston speed, and bearing loads, as well as for bearing, crankshaft, and crankcase design.
