Investigation of manner in which vehicles follow each other on highway without passing, and of propagation disturbances down line of vehicles; it is shown that motion of long line of vehicles becomes unstable when product of lag time and proportionality constant exceeds one-half; experimental data implies that driving is done on verge of instability; analysis of several other laws of following.
