Paper emphasizes upgrading of basic brake systems on school buses resulting from recent agreement by manufacturers on minimum level of performance by which they will certify total vehicle brake system; review of current status of service brake systems is presented, together with summary of various dual and emergency braking systems available for hydraulic and air braked vehicles; evaluation of propeller shaft brake or parking brake shows that it does have some limited capability as stopping brake, provided it is adequately sized.
