Reference is made to exploration of color Schlieren systems at Rutgers Emil Buehler supersonic wind tunnel in conjunction with studies of separated compressible-fluid flows; how to convert conventional Schlieren system to color system using tri-color filter is described; color sensitivities of films may dictate change in color choice, but tests so far indicate that red-blue-yellow combination is also best photographically; system demonstrated its importance in analysis of supersonic flows by increasing sensitivity to detail in regions previously represented inadequately.
