Development of Great Lakes radiotelephone system built around use of 156.8 Mc as safety calling channel is described; navigational traffic handled by VHF system falls into three categories -- intercommunication between ships on one of two available intership channels after contact has been established on safety calling channel, securite calls on safety calling channel, and communication with VHF coast stations on one of several working channels for handling of wide variety of navigational functions; United States and International Maritime VHF allocation tables are compared.
