Method of loading and unloading used rail in continuous jointed strings now being used by Missouri Pacific is described; equipment used was modified for handling jointed strings; quarter-mile lengths released from track are pulled on board 33-car rail train by special power unit and hauled directly to site where they are to be relaid; power unit, which is built on 50-ton flat car with 53-ft cast-steel underframe, uses 150-hp diesel engine to drive pair of pumps which force hydraulic fluid under 1500 psi to hydraulic motors for all functions on power car.
