New methods of hydraulic power application and control incorporated into Tinsley marshalling yard at Sheffield, England; main new feature of yard is means of accelerating and braking individual cars rolling through sidings by using small vertical hydraulic ram and cylinder units mounted beside rails and acting on wheel flanges; unit can retard car by offering resistance to depression during first half of flange movement over it, or it can accelerate car by giving flange kick during last part of movement over it.
