Uprated Saturn I is composed of two propulsion stages, designated S-IB and S-IVB stages, and Instrument Unit; methods of providing increased payload together with vehicle uprating studied by Chrysler Corp Space Div and NASA include propellant substitution, S-IB stage propellant tank extensions, and addition of strap-on solid propellant rocket motors for thrust augmentation; additional upper stages as potential uprating techniques and combinations of solid rocket motors and additional upper stages are reviewed; analysis shows that uprating is feasible up to 106,000 1b payload into low earth orbit and up to 25,000 lb on Mars mission.
