Atlas family meets increased payload requirements of next decade with maximum cost effectiveness by uprating SLV-3, using mission compatible upper stages, incorporating sustainer tank apogee kick concept, augmenting thrust with strap-on motors, and performing multiple missions with single launch vehicle; history and features of Atlas and advanced Atlas launch vehicle family; performance curves are presented, showing Atlas as direct ascent vehicle and as booster for available upper stages; mission/payload summaries are included to show payload weights for various earth orbital and planetary missions using Atlas family combinations.
