In development of ammonium perchlorate polyurethane solid propellants at CARDE, (Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment), unstable combustion in finite-wave axial mode was occasionally experienced; to provide method for testing instability by minimum number of firings, pulse technique employing small gunpowder charges was developed to initiate unstable combustion when motor is operating in incipiently unstable regime; technique and devices are described and some results obtained presented; technique was used successfully for rocket motors, heavy-walled and flight-type, from 2 to 17 in. in diam.
