High-thrust propulsion system with specific impulse of 1100 to 1500 sec would be valuable for single-stage reusable Earth-to-orbit vehicles, and system with specific impulse of 200 to 3000 sec would give powerful capability for interplanetary flight; concepts proposed to gain such high performance include fluidized beds, liquid-core reactors, gas-core schemes, and pulsed nuclear rockets; state of engineering development for each of these concepts is assessed and problem areas are described.
