Availability in atlas form of statistics of wave height and period collected on various world sea routes is noted; paper presents one-dimensional sea spectrum which permits these statistics to be expressed realistically in energy density terms; spectrum is related to wind speed where possible, with view to answering questions about ship behavior in specified high winds; such relation defines completely spectrum in terms of wind speed, and such spectra may be produced in model experiment tanks for study of variety of types of model response.
