Exploration of design concepts considered adaptable to trends in development of propulsion systems and/or to emergency conditions, with reference to merchant ship; afterbody lines and aperture, number of propeller blades, offset positioning of shaft and mass-elastic characteristics of propulsion system and supporting structure in relation to vibration and shafting design; torque tubing as alternate to solid forged shafting; modification of geometry of propeller shaft design to effect improvement in stress pattern in critical areas; development of ultrasonic testing to minimize requirement of shaft withdrawals for inspection.
