Paper presents Coast Guard's position in regard to recent developments in design, materials and automation of marine power plants, and jurisdiction and interests are summarized; changes occurring within Merchant Marine Technical Div to provide for more thorough analysis of complex technical problems are noted; principles upon which Coast Guard evaluates new and unique designs are amplified; automation of ships' power plants is examined; some background and experience for recently published Coast Guard " Guide for Centralized Control of Main and Auxiliary Machinery" is given; problems in future ship automation and manning are summarized.
