Tradeoff potentials of major cost factors in building and operating commercial ships are seen as economic considerations governing advancements in marine power plants; unit tradeoff values of costs of capital, fuel, manning, maintenance and repair are presented for 15,000, 25,000 and 35,000 shp cargo ship plant, their effects on each other in determining economic potential of any advancements being considered; also given is comparative unit value of loss of revenue caused by one day ship time for assessing improvements and importance of reliability in ship operation.
