Purpose is to provide guidance in design, construction and operation of nuclear merchant ships to assure safety of public, passengers and crew; type of fuel used, fuel cladding, primary coolant system, containment system and ship's hull are examples of extensive safety back-up against loss of radioactive material; consideration is given primarily to installaation of nuclear reactors in ships of fairly large size and to past marine casualties involving such large ships; recommendations have been made with intent of preventing dangerous uncontrolled release of fission products in event of such casualties.
