It is noted that thin-walled containers on board ships are frequently supported more or less singularly by ship hull; as consequence of this, and other factors involved, discrete ring type stiffeners are often provided at such locations; designer is thus confronted with stress problem of substantial complexity; paper demonstrates application of thin-shell theory to self-equilibrated part of this particular boundary-value problem, and shows how typical tractions penetrate into shell.
