Experiences with EMD GP-9 units powered with EMD Model 16-567C engines on Union Pacific between Omaha and Pacific Coast; at altitudes above 4000 ft and ambient temperatures above 90 F, they suffer from marginal air fuel ratios resulting in excessive smoke and short life of pistons, cylinders and valves; investigation to develop multiple unit turbo-charging system for improving altitude operation.
