Analysis of various operations of oil tankers; use of conventional type of steam-smothering system is apt to result in even greater hazards than would otherwise exist; other important disadvantages of using steam in tanks; suggestion made as to how cost of steam-smothering system can be saved by connecting master valve to after end of deck piping system, designed primarily for distributing inert gas to tanks, and for venting tanks while loading.
