Review of past applications and future prospects for plastics and reinforced plastics; some properties of plastics (high strength to weight ratio, relatively low costs, moldability, corrosion resistance) make these especially suitable for railroad applications; lack of design data, flammability, long term fatigue stress and stress corrosion performance are drawbacks; they have been successfully applied in ferrule manufacture, pipe lines, rail fastener clip insulators, passenger coach frames.
