Results are presented of extensive tire grip tests performed in West Germany since 1958 using locked-wheel method; distribution of skid resistance valves in road network corresponds to Gaussian normal distribution; if value of skid resistance coefficient of given road section falls below 90% of that of modern road surface, above-average accident frequency on wet road section is to be expected; influence of weather and age causes seasonal variations of skid resistance values.
