Capabilities of number of launching systems are reviewed, and some current United States spacecraft listed to indicate range of missions that are feasible; considerations which influence choice of new launching system to meet possible requirement for European vehicle are discussed, with particular reference to effects of booster stage recovery on economics; five expendable launching systems, and one using recoverable booster stage are considered; estimates are made of relative costs per pound in orbit; some possible trends in propulsion system development.
