Nature of unstable burning in solid propellant rocket motors is considered and associated design penalties arising in development of rocket motors are enumerated; examples of instability are given, together with description of empirical methods which have been adopted to eliminate or reduce effects of instability; outline of current theoretical investigations aimed at elucidating problems involved; in conclusion, critical appraisal is made of present state of understanding of problems involved in unstable burning of solid propellants.
