Rocket motors for operation in ground launched vehicles have nozzle expansion ratios giving optimum thrust at low altitude (about 20,000 ft); at higher altitudes, jets are under-expanded and thrust is less than maximum available with nozzles of higher expansion ratio; some of lost thrust may be regained by suitable design of propulsion bay geometry; where vehicle is propelled by clustered motors, interaction between jet effluxes at high altitudes can be used to develop extra thrust acting on base of vehicle; flow changes, from low to high altitude, leading to these effects, are described.
