Five successful reactor power tests (one with Kiwi-B-4D, two with Kiwi-B-4E, and two with Nerva NRX-A2) demonstrated suitability of reactor designs, predicted high performance, long operating times, and ability to restart and run again at full power, to start rapidly and automatically from completely shutdown condition; tests achieved altitude-equivalent specific impulse of about 760 sec; current program goals include demonstrating higher-temperature and higher-power-density reactor operation and longer reactor runs, and ground experimental engine system testing; availability of nuclear rockets for post-Apollo missions is foreseen.
