Lateral thrust acts vertically to missile axis and alters direction of flight trajectory; it is shown that lateral forces arise randomly in direction and size during motor firings; to determine origin of random lateral thrust gas flow through 2-dimensional, transparent air-flow model has been observed; model simulates flow inside solid propellant rocket motor and through nozzle; it is shown that lateral forces can be produced in model through non-axisymmetric profile of all mass-flow in subsonic portion of nozzle.
