Cost of Department of Defense maintenance coupled with need for improved maintenance in many aerospace activities resulted in large changes to approach of maintainability; for hydraulic controls and systems for missiles and manned space vehicles, procedures were established which put special emphasis on maintainability from inception of program; these changes resulted in detailed improvements in maintainability through both procedural and component design improvements.
