Experimental testing was carried out to obtain design data on bonded sheet cork, to be applied as external insulation material for ascent flight of Minuteman missiles; considerations included definition of heat flux and enthalpy ranges, study of material thermal efficiency and material ablation characteristics, evaluation of critical physical characteristics, study of environmental effects, and development of processing techniques; program encompassed laboratory tests, tests of components, flight evaluations, and actual missile flights; resulting test data and design criteria are summarized.
