In area of rocket trajectory optimization, overriding considerations such as minimum takeoff or maximum payload, determine selection of single criterion of optimality; once criterion and purpose of optimization are settled, mathematical tools must be chosen for optimization analysis; physical means for choice or variation of rocket trajectory include optimal design and optimal control; first deals with distribution and shape of aerodynamic configuration; second with thrust direction and magnitude as well as aerodynamic forces.
